It's been awhile, but what better way to get back into it than everybody's favorite Thirsty Thursdays! Below is a shot we did for our portfolio, a Pomegranate Martini and since this is Chicagoland it's only appropriate to showcase Oprah's Favorite Pomegranate Martini Recipe!

1 oz Smirnoff® vodka

1/2 oz Cointreau® orange liqueur

3 oz pomegranate juice

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker 1/4 filled with chopped ice.

Shake and strain into a cocktail glass.

Serve with a squeeze of lemon.

For the past couple years we've made hard cover portfolios using Asuka Book. This year it was themed "Sierra Foodisms" and we used all food photography and created continuity with interesting little words that somehow relate to food, food photography, and or eating. We were excited to learn that our book was chosen to be Asuka Book's Book of the Month! Often times I receive helpful little emails with relevant and interesting information. Today I found a great little article waiting for me in my inbox. Study Shows People Ignore Generic Photos Online by Nick Bilton was posted online by The New York Times. This great little article proves that getting professional photographs taken of your product/brand drastically increases consumer attention. We love hearing facts that prove our work is not only "worth it" but also proven effective. A few highlights from the article are listed below. Enjoy and be sure to read the article in it's entirety here!

“Invest in good photo shoots: a great photographer can add a fortune to your

Web site’s business value.” After all, he notes, most sites are full of

“fluff — of which there’s too much already on the Web.”

I realize we usually do Thirsty Thursdays but this week has been a little off due to the holiday weekend. So Thirsty Friday it is! We'll also do things a little differently this week, with more of a "photo of the week"/Thirsty Thursday combination! We had a lot of fun with this shoot a couple weeks ago. We created a bar-like atmosphere and really wanted a great ambience to showcase the beer. I think it turned out perfect and definitely a bar that I'd want to visit! Cheers!

If everything could be shot on distressed wood, I think it would make everything THAT much more appealing! I'm not sure what it is, but it just texturally makes us happy. We photograph a brand that calls for a wooden dock "like" background, so seeing that we don't have a studio on the water and one can't magically appear, we fake it! Nothing a few old boards, some blue fabric and strategic lighting can't help.

We had a two day shoot a couple weeks ago that consisted of Gelato and Sorbet. I'm sure it comes as no surprise that we were all drooling after the 80 tubs of all flavors arrived. Yes, I said 80....We had to rent THREE freezers to fit it all in the studio! But as usual, all the hard work planning payed off and we had a very enjoyable and smooth shoot.

Shapes in Food

It's no secret that we do a lot of food photography. On most days, we stare at food for 8 hours a day and only naturally, we start seeing things. Similarly to staring up at the clouds and pointing out shapes, animals, faces, places, etc. Us here at Sierra see these things in plated food. We have so many instances that we can actually start sharing our great little treasures that we find! So Tuesday is now our official "Shapes in Food" day. Pink Lemonade Margarita - 5 servings 1 cup each

Original recipe from Kraft Foods.

Ingredients:

1 tub CRYSTAL LIGHT Pink Lemonade Flavor Low Calorie Soft Drink Mix

1-1/2 cups cold water

1/2 cup cold orange juice

2 Tbsp. tequila

1 Tbsp. lime juice

5 cups crushed ice

PLACE drink mix, water, orange juice, tequila and lime juice in blender container; cover.

BLEND on high speed until drink mix is dissolved.

ADD ice; cover. Blend on high speed until thickened and smooth. Serve immediately.

Absolut Mang-ito

2 Parts Absolut Pears Vodka

1/2 Parts Pineapple Juice

1/2 Part Sweetened Iced Tea

3 Dashes Ginger Syrup

6 Mint Leaves

6 Pieces Mango Cubes

Muddle mint and mango cubes in a mixing glass.

Add vodka and ginger juice, then shake. Pour into highball,

and top with pineapple juice and sweetened iced tea.

A few weeks ago, we shot chicken enchiladas! It was one of the more complicated styled shots, especially due to the fact that it was for packaging. Packaging photography = perfection and/or exactly what one would think perfectly made enchiladas should look like. It needs to look SO perfect, that no one, not even for a second, questions what it is. Before we took them off set, we were able to take a couple more editorial shots. Enjoy!

Just by looking at these 'behind the scene' shots, literally quick takes between adjustments and such, that all of these photographs turned out SO beautiful. White, crisp, modern, and everything bridal! Check out those ruffle curtains {previously posted here} too! They create the most perfect texture, without distracting.

This specific recipe is probably for a larger group, summer get together, or I guess if you like to drink a lot....yourself! It's very summery and refreshing, especially with the fresh lemon and mint sprigs. I would recommend getting a cute pitcher and serving like that!

Watermelonade Mixers

1 {12-pound} watermelon {preferably seedless}
1/4 cup sugar, divided
4 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, divided
16 cups ice cubes, divided
12.7 ounces {Half of a Fifth} of Watermelon Flavored Vodka

Garnish:

lemon slices; mint sprigs
Cut watermelon flesh into 2-inch chunks and discard rind. Purée one fourth of watermelon in a blender with 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 tsp lemon juice, 4 cups ice, and a pinch of salt. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl, discarding solids. Make 3 more batches. Add the Watermelon Vodka and sugar to taste. Serve over ice.

We have a wedding inspired shoot coming up tomorrow and we couldn't be more excited. We do shoot a lot of food but love shooting a variety of different products and tomorrow is no exception! We will have a makeup & hairstylist, models, and will be shooting a variety of room scenes. The theme is white, white and more white {hello bridal}! We are hanging sheers on a white sweep in order to create texture. We got plain white sheers {exactly what the client wanted} but also white sheers with a little twist in order to offer some variety! We like to make sure all bases are covered and sometimes it's good to offer options just in case the client might want some.

Pineapple Mai Tai Recipe

Pineapple Mai Tai Ingredients:

4 oz orange juice

4 oz pineapple juice

1 oz lime juice

1 oz dark rum

1 oz light rum

1 oz triple sec

1/2 oz grenadine

Mix all ingredients, shake with ice, and strain into a glass.

Garnish with a cherry and a pineapple wedge.

My favorite part of this Sierra recipe photograph is that it can be breakfast or dessert! With pancakes, cherries, walnuts, chocolate chips, and whip cream, it's the best of both worlds. Which would you eat it for?

There are many different kinds of food photography shots that range in complexity and difficulty. To name a couple, there are outline shots, packaging shots, and the elusive recipe shots. Recipe shots can be more editorial and definitely leave a little room for creativity. There are still {as always} a shot list and certain items that HAVE to be included in the shot, but in terms of placement and angle, there is a little leeway.

Thirsty Thursdays

It's that time again! This week we're going to try a fresh twist on an old favorite, Vodka Tonic. The below shot was so much fun to create that we had to do a Thirsty Thursday feature with it.

So for the fresh twist, instead of traditional tonic, why not include lime flavored La Croix {would even be good with any of the featured flavors below!}? Of course if you love your limes then you can also include extra fresh limes with as well!

A Fresh twist on Vodka Tonic

Ingredients

2 Ounces of Vodka {brand of your choosing}

7 Ounces La Croix {we think lime or orange would be AMAZING!}

Shake it up!

Then add a fresh lime twist and you have a delicious and refreshing treat:)

Another Thirsty Thursday is upon us and we're craving something Sweet and Salty, just like the photo {below} taken at Sierra! The whole image just looks so refreshing...Where are you Summer? We're ready for you and will be drinking these in the meantime, in hopes you'll arrive soon:)

Salty Dog

5 oz grapefruit juice

1 1/2 oz gin

1/4 tsp salt

Pour all ingredients over ice cubes in a highball glass.

Stir well and serve.

(Vodka may be substituted for gin, if preferred.)

faking it

We fake it a lot around here;) As long as we're not shooting product for packaging that is {a big no no in the food photography world}. One instance being with beverages. It's not always constructive to use real ice in shots....seeing that it tends to melt {really??} and time is usually a major factor in shoots.
So that brings me to our little friend...fake ice. Yes there is such a thing and it comes in many different shapes & sizes as well as a few different materials. Ah the possibilities!
Some ice floats and some sinks and depending on what you're intentions are with the shot, one will probably be used over the other. There are even little 'tricks of the trade' to make the shot not look fake including spraying dulling mist on glasses or pitchers, in order to create a frosting effect {frosted mug please!} and then spritzing them with water to give the illusion of perspiration. Are you feeling cheated at this very moment? Please don't:) It just means we're good at our jobs and may even be considered optical illusionists. Which brings me to the main question...

It's Thursday and I'm sure everyone is in need for one of these! A new blogger ritual for Sierra will be to showcase a beverage photograph and accompany that with a recipe! I couldn't really help myself when I came across this photograph that we shot last winter {Yes winter...doesn't it look straight out of a backyard?!}. Margaritas are definitely a favorite and made that much better with FRESH mangos:) Happy Thursday!

Mango Margarita

2 oz tequila of your choice

¾ oz Grand Marnier

1 oz mango nectar

¾ oz orange juice

¾ oz lime juice

1 tsp simple syrup

Slice of mango, for garnish

Sugar, for garnish

Rim your chilled margarita glass with sugar. Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake it up! Strain into the glass with a bit of crushed ice. Garnish with mango slice and enjoy!

Chicago Style

The Chicago Style hot dog, not to be confused with the Coney Dog, Slaw Dog, Chili Dog, or Italian Style Dog. I think everyone gets my point, there are a lot of different ways to serve hot dogs! Each of these recipes is a combination of several ingredients that definitely need to be accompanied by a napkin. However, the deliciousness of all these ingredients combined, pose a little dilemma when it comes to photographing them.

The combinations {though yummy} can get a little muddy in presentation. So the task at hand is how to photograph all the components clearly and beautifully {while also keeping everything looking appetizing!}. With every recipe shot, we clearly identify each of our ingredients, then assemble the recipe in a way that showcases each of them without being too obvious with placement {nothing too perfect!}. Sometimes it can take hours getting these tiny details just perfect. It may seem like a tedious process but in the end the shot is what makes all the time and effort worth it!

The search for the PERFECT grill marks

Yes...that's right...the perfect grill marks. It's an art and one needs to know their grill personally in order to recreate a natural looking grill mark. You don't want the grill marks to look too thick, thin, or unnaturally spread out. Some stylists create an outline of the grill and grates in order to match the burgers to the grill that they will be photographed on. Like I said...an absolute art.

I can seriously smell the aroma of the studio, on this day by simply staring at these photos. The whole place smelled like a summer barbecue! So cruel since it's just barely grilling season...soon though...and in the meantime enjoy the torture below:)

Friday Favorites

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the slight lack of posts this week but this week was very eventful at Sierra. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers are actually very complex contrary to what some people might believe. This week was spent shooting and styling their complexity, playing with fire {FUN!}, and assisting in creating great dining scenes for shots. So I will start of by apologizing for bombarding everyone with hints of Summer but I just can't help myself:) Many of our shoots of late have been products that one would find at a delicious Summer barbecue and it's just making me long for those warm months. I LOVE props. I believe it's an important aspect in what makes the photography "world" go round. Yes there are many different aspects that contribute to this but I feel like sometimes the most perfect prop can take a photograph from average to above. One might not think of props immediately when they think food photography, but to the contrary it can give the product an overall mood. Specific plates, their colors, and shapes are picked in order to create a consistency of brand and a comprehensive "look". Not only plates, but sometimes place settings or a faux room setting is necessary as well. For example, we have a client that wants to create a Summer inspired set for their product. So our studio manager, Urszula, searched high and low for the perfect plates, bowls, place mats, and glasses in the specific hues and shades the art director requested. The end result was an impressive display {if I do say so myself} that we have organized by color and shape for the client to pick and choose from. I get excited by just looking at all the summery goodness...Enjoy:)

Once again, the details of this job amaze me. When I heard we were shooting granola bars, I immediately thought "Oooh this will be an easy shoot." One would think such a tiny little snack would be a "tiny little" shoot. Definitely not the case, who would've ever thought photographing a granola bar could be so complex {now that I look back...how silly of me to assume...granola bars probably have about 8-10 ingredients....ingredients are everything because you need to highlight them all}.

First off, one needs to "perk up" the product with some superb ingredients. For example, we receive product and have to pick the BEST granola bar from the lot. From there you take apart a couple additional bars and use those pieces to create a masterpiece {a raisin here, an almond there}. These "pieces" need to be applied with the tiniest of tools and, as I'm sure the food stylist could attest, the steadiest of hands {sometimes I think the food stylists could be surgeons!}. Maybe food styling is where creative individuals that could've been surgeons end up? Anyways, I'm here to go back on my original assumption...granola bars are far from being the definition of an easy shoot. No matter the difficulty at least we always have fun:)

Food & Style

While scouring the internet the other day, I stumbled across this great blog post on food styling at a blog called "La Tartine Gourmande." This particular quote really caught my attention,

"In my food pictures, I typically want to create a story and produce an emotion."

Immediately I thought "emotional eating" {ha} but obviously that is not what is being discussed. Like all photography, one wants someone to feel something when viewing their work, whether it be happiness or sadness {is hunger an emotion??} and the same goes for food photography.

Beatrice Peltre is the stylist/photographer who owns this blog and she shoots a lot of her own creations! I love the clean and crisp feel to all the photographs {not to mention all her food looks delicious}. After starting at Sierra and seeing stylists work, I've became really interested in learning more about everything that goes into the food styling so naturally I was drawn to this! It dates back from 2007 but there are a lot of helpful and really inspired tips that I thought would be fun to share. Not to mention this is a great site for just about everything from cooking, styling, and photography:)

An excerpt from "La Tartine Gourmande"

Tips on Food Styling

Always ask yourself, what the food you are shooting means to you. Is it rustic, elegant, does it need to be eaten in the dish, on a plate, outside or inside?
Look for colors that enhance the food. Perhaps the same color for the food and background, or matching colors.
Use repetitive shapes, geometry and symmetry to make pictures interesting.
Pay attention to balancing space between the food and props. Move objects around to play with different settings.
Use textured backgrounds that give more life, and vary angles to shoot and frame the picture.
Do not always shoot from the same angle. Overhead shots, front or side.
Always shoot larger than the end result. Remember you can always crop the pictures like you prefer in post.
Be playful with the food and showcase the beauty found in raw ingredients. Observe the natural shapes and forms in food.
You do not need to show everything either. Suggestive cropping can really have a more powerful effect.

After this, she went on to show a few photographs of the muffins that she had made and photographed, then explained her reasoning for why she styled everything the way she did it {photographs accompanying this particular section can be found in the post here}.

Why did I show the molds in which the muffins had been cooked?
To create the story from beginning to end. I did not clean the molds on purpose. I spent time arranging the pile in the background until I was happy with its looks.
Why did I use a narrow depth of field?
Because the most important thing is the muffins, and so using a selective focus is what I was after.
Why did I show a muffin half-eaten?
To make the reader and viewer participate. It could be as if you were eating the muffin too. Showing from top with an overhead shot also helped with the story I wanted to convey. Notice that I cropped to show only parts of the muffins. And I organized them in a horizontal line.
Why the basil and tomato on top of the muffin? To suggest the flavors of the muffin (you would not use a fresh herb that is not used in the recipe).
Why a geometrical pattern for the background?
To repeat the round shape of the muffins.

Imperfection?

"The look of modern food photography is certainly becoming more natural and believable..."

This is definitely a trend that food photography is starting to take. Personally, I feel that it makes for fun and incidental looking photographs. Maybe incidental looking but, it is also what one would expect out of their meals. Crumbs here...spills there. It instills the popular Marilyn quote that "Imperfection is beauty..." or maybe a new Sierra quote "imperfect looking food makes for delicious looking photography:)"

However "disheveled" or imperfect, doesn't necessarily mean the photographs are not styled or do not require a stylist {But lets be honest, our disheveled is not in the classical sense, it's more of a controlled disheveling!}.

The casual look of these photographs take just as much styling, as say a very neat & clean shot. When shooting for national clients, rarely is anything casual. There is always an art director or creative director that knows exactly what they want and how they want the shot to look prior to the actual shoot. It takes a lot of work on both food stylist and photographers ends to create these visions.

On Location?

Who wouldn't want to be shooting here?! The fresh air, beautiful landscape, and I guess having a beautiful model to work with doesn't hurt either. I know...everyone is jealous right about now. However, after I tell you this next bit of information the jealousy might fade because this photograph is not actually on location {What?!!}. Sometimes budget doesn't allow for on location shoots, so, at times, Sierra needs to get creative.
We actually combined a model, who we shot for a jewelry company, and a stock image {hello beautiful irish farmland!} Doesn't this remind you of the scene in P.S. I love you where Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler first meet?? Love that movie! Anyways, as I was saying, sometimes the use of stock photography is necessary and to be honest, who can tell the difference? Definitely not me:) Although it might not be ideal {mostly because I would really like to be here!}, it is a great substitute to the real thing and definitely creates diversity within the studio's capabilities.

It's all about the....

Instant Mashed Potatoes!

As a struggling college student I once thought of instant mashed potatoes as a well balanced meal. I'm not joking when I say this, I liked them. Now that I am no longer in college and probably ate them for one too many meals, I cringe when I think about eating them. Which is just exemplified by the information I have recently learned. Instant mashed potatoes are used for food styling! Pretty much as the concrete to the creation {concrete is a perfect description of my once delicious meal's texture}. I can't give away all our food stylist's secrets, but lets just say once someone sees how they're used {like a white play doh!} they would definitely not want to put them anywhere near their mouth. There are many interesting 'tricks of the trade' that one would never guess {i.e. garment steamer} but this one definitely stuck out as rather quirky. So lets just say Sierra has a rather sizable amount of instant mashed potatoes in stock...just in case anyone's hungry:)
